Sajikan Narasi Penciptaan Dunia Lewat Tujuh Trek Kombinasi Musik Lokal Taiwan-Afrobeat

 

Kolektif Formobeat asal Taiwan, Island Futurism, merilis album kedua mereka yang bertajuk “Patri-Ark 海長老” pada awal Mei 2023 ini. Ada tujuh lagu yang sudah bisa didengar di sejumlah Digital Streaming Platform. Kolektif musik dengan 11 personel ini mencampurkan banyak pengaruh dalam musiknya. Itu mencakup Afrobeat, jazz, funk, psikadelik, hingga dub/reggae yang dikombinasikan dengan elemen-elemen lokal Taiwan baik itu dari tradisi Hokkien maupun orang asli Taiwan.

 

Meski lagu-lagunya cenderung instrumentalia tanpa syair, Island Futurism membangun sebuah narasi yang cukup kuat dari keseluruhan album ini. Itu semua terhubung dari lagu pertama sampai terakhir, pemilihan judul, keberagaman instrumen, hingga artwork.

 

Island Futurism menyebut keseluruhan album ini menggambarkan kepercayaan orang Taiwan atas dibangunnya sebuah peradaban. Itu dimulai ketika sebuah batu raksasa jatuh dari langit dan bencana banjir besar yang merupakan titik balik antara dunia mitologis kuno dengan dunia sejarah saat ini.  

Album dibuka dengan kisah jatuhnya sebuah batu besar dari langit dan mitos banjir yang disampaikan dalam trek “Giant Stone Falling from The Sky”. Kisah ini dipercaya mewakili titik balik antara dunia mitologis kuno dan dunia sejarah saat ini yang dianggap cocok sebagai gerbang narasi dari album Patri-Ark. Di trek kedua, disusul oleh “Sunbird” terinspirasi oleh burung Siliq di Gunung Sylvania, mengisahkan pasangan pertama di dunia setelah seekor burung dewa membuka batu raksasa. Adapun lagu utama “Patri-Ark”, yang justru disimpan sebagai trek ketujuh, merupakan penghormatan kepada dewa laut “Hái-Ang” (penatua laut). Ini mewakili dewa laut dan budaya pemujaan paus raksasa di Taiwan.

 

Album ini menyertakan dua interpretasi modern dari melodi tradisional: “Spring Around” dan “Water-Moon Ascending to the Tower.” “Spring Around” merayakan musim semi selama peradaban pertanian dan menggabungkan ritme dasar yang mengacu pada referensi Afrika. Sementara “Water-Moon Ascending to the Tower” menggunakan “delapan nada” – instrumen skala kuno yang umum digunakan di seluruh Asia Timur untuk menciptakan suasana perjalanan waktu yang menghubungkan masa lalu dengan masa depan.

 

Proses rekaman album ini dimulai sejak Januari 2023 di Yuchen Studio, salah satu studio rekaman ternama di Taiwan yang juga sering menggelar sebuah Live Sessions bertajuk “CINEMAPHONIC”. Island Futurism melibatkan produser dan mixing engineer Ta-Wei Wong, juga Chen-Yen Wu sebagai recording engineer. Untuk teknisi drum mereka percayakan pada Lijon Hsu. Adapun proses mastering dilakukan di Metropolis Studio, Amerika Serikat oleh Mike Hillier, seorang mastering engineer kelas dunia yang pernah bekerja sama dengan Bonobo, Kasabian, Maribou State, The Streets, hingga Genesis.

 

Penggarapan sampul dilakukan oleh ilustrator kenamaan Taiwan, Khu Tsing-Bûn yang kemudian dirancang tata letaknya oleh Han Wu. Keseluruhan sampul dibuat lebih otentik dengan kearifan lokal kaligrafi Taiwan yang digarap oleh Yo-Shin Lai.

 

Dengan racikan musik yang beragam, Island Futurism dipastikan akan menjadi satu unit yang tidak hanya bisa diterima oleh Taiwan, tetapi juga Asia bahkan dunia.

Island Futurism digagas oleh DJ @llenblow, seorang veteran di kancah dub/reggae Taiwan yang sebelumnya menggagas sejumlah proyek musik seperti Hang In The Air & Taimaica Soundsystem. DJ @llenblow sejak awal sampai saat ini menjadi bassis untuk Island Futurism.

 

Kini, Island Futurism diperkuat oleh How Chen pada guitar dan Hong-Yu Chen (Tenor Saxophone & Dizi) serta Grace Lu (Trumpet) di posisi brass section. Pada drum dan perkusi, masing-masing ada Guan-Zheng Wu (drums), Danny Tsai (jimbe), Wahcee (drum pad), Eileen Tu (woodpecker), dan shekere yang dimainkan oleh Acknos Ko & Diana Chen. Semua instrumen kemudian diolah oleh A.P.R.A yang berada di posisi dub control. Formasi ini membuat “Patri-Ark” menjadi lebih bernuansa sci-fi jika dibanding dengan debut mereka “Aislander” (2020).

Presenting the Narrative of World Creation Through Seven Tracks of Taiwanese-Afrobeat Local Music Combination
 
Taiwanese format collective Island Futurism released their second album, “Patri-Ark 海長老,” in early May 2023. There are seven tracks that can already be heard on a number of Digital Streaming Platforms. The 11-piece music collective mixes many influences in its music. These include Afrobeat, jazz, funk, psychedelic, and dub/reggae combined with local Taiwanese elements from both Hokkien and native Taiwanese traditions.
 
Although the songs tend to be instrumental without lyrics, Island Futurism builds a strong narrative throughout the album. It’s all connected from the first to the last song, the choice of title, the diversity of instruments, to the artwork.
 
Island Futurism said that the whole album depicts the Taiwanese belief in the construction of civilization. It begins when a giant rock falls from the sky, and a catastrophic flood is the turning point between the ancient mythological world and today’s historical world.  
The album opens with the story of a huge rock falling from the sky and the mythical flood conveyed in the track “Giant Stone Falling from the Sky.” This story is believed to represent the turning point between the ancient mythological world and the current world of history, which is considered suitable as the narrative gateway of the Patri-Ark album. The second track, followed by “Sunbird,” inspired by the Siliq bird on Mount Sylvania, tells the story of the world’s first couple after a divine bird opens a giant stone. The title track, “Patri-Ark,” which is actually saved as the seventh track, is a tribute to the sea god “Hái-Ang” (the elder of the sea). It represents the god of the sea and the culture of giant whale worship in Taiwan.
 
The album includes two modern interpretations of traditional melodies: “Spring Around” and “Water-Moon Ascending to the Tower.” “Spring Around” celebrates springtime during agricultural civilizations and incorporates a basic rhythm that draws on African references. While “Water-Moon Ascending to the Tower” uses “eight tones” – an ancient scale instrument commonly used throughout East Asia to create a time-traveling atmosphere that connects the past with the future.
 
The recording process of the album began in January 2023 at Yuchen Studio, one of the leading recording studios in Taiwan that also frequently holds Live Sessions titled “CINEMAPHONIC.” Island Futurism involved producer and mixing engineer Ta-Wei Wong, as well as Chen-Yen Wu as recording engineer. For the drum technician, they entrusted Lijon Hsu. The mastering process was done at Metropolis Studio, U.S.A., by Mike Hillier, a world-class mastering engineer who has worked with Bonobo, Kasabian, Maribou State, The Streets, and Genesis.
 
The cover art was done by renowned Taiwanese illustrator Khu Tsing-Bûn, and the layout was designed by Han Wu. The entire cover is made more authentic with the local wisdom of Taiwanese calligraphy by Yo-Shin Lai. With a diverse mix of music, Island Futurism will certainly be a unit that can be not only accepted by Taiwan but also by Asia and even the world.

Island Futurism is a musical collective that is now filled with 11 personnel. The collective, which calls its music Formobeat or Formosa (another name for the island of Taiwan) beat, began its musical journey in Taipei, Taiwan, in 2018.
 
Island Futurism was initiated by D.J. @llenblow, a veteran in the Taiwanese dub/reggae scene who previously initiated a number of musical projects such as Hang In The Air & Taimaica Soundsystem. D.J. @llenblow has been the bassist for Island Futurism since the beginning.

The album opens with the story of a huge rock falling from the sky and the mythical flood conveyed in the track “Giant Stone Falling from the Sky.” This story is believed to represent the turning point between the ancient mythological world and the current world of history, which is considered suitable as the narrative gateway of the Patri-Ark album. The second track, followed by “Sunbird,” inspired by the Siliq bird on Mount Sylvania, tells the story of the world’s first couple after a divine bird opens a giant stone. The title track, “Patri-Ark,” which is actually saved as the seventh track, is a tribute to the sea god “Hái-Ang” (the elder of the sea). It represents the god of the sea and the culture of giant whale worship in Taiwan.
 
The album includes two modern interpretations of traditional melodies: “Spring Around” and “Water-Moon Ascending to the Tower.” “Spring Around” celebrates springtime during agricultural civilizations and incorporates a basic rhythm that draws on African references. While “Water-Moon Ascending to the Tower” uses “eight tones” – an ancient scale instrument commonly used throughout East Asia to create a time-traveling atmosphere that connects the past with the future.
 
The recording process of the album began in January 2023 at Yuchen Studio, one of the leading recording studios in Taiwan that also frequently holds Live Sessions titled “CINEMAPHONIC.” Island Futurism involved producer and mixing engineer Ta-Wei Wong, as well as Chen-Yen Wu as recording engineer. For the drum technician, they entrusted Lijon Hsu. The mastering process was done at Metropolis Studio, U.S.A., by Mike Hillier, a world-class mastering engineer who has worked with Bonobo, Kasabian, Maribou State, The Streets, and Genesis.
 
The cover art was done by renowned Taiwanese illustrator Khu Tsing-Bûn, and the layout was designed by Han Wu. The entire cover is made more authentic with the local wisdom of Taiwanese calligraphy by Yo-Shin Lai.
With a diverse mix of music, Island Futurism will certainly be a unit that can be not only accepted by Taiwan but also by Asia and even the world.

About Island Futurism

 

Island Futurism is a musical collective that is now filled with 11 personnel. The collective, which calls its music Formobeat or Formosa (another name for the island of Taiwan) beat, began its musical journey in Taipei, Taiwan, in 2018.
 
Island Futurism was initiated by D.J. @llenblow, a veteran in the Taiwanese dub/reggae scene who previously initiated a number of musical projects such as Hang In The Air & Taimaica Soundsystem. D.J. @llenblow has been the bassist for Island Futurism since the beginning.
 
Currently, Island Futurism is joined by How Chen on guitar, Hong-Yu Chen (Tenor Saxophone & Dizi), and Grace Lu (Trumpet) in the brass section. On drums and percussion, there are Guan-Zheng Wu (drums), Danny Tsai (jimbe), Wahcee (drum pad), Eileen Tu (woodpecker), and shekere, played by Acknos Ko & Diana Chen, respectively. All instruments are then processed by A.P.R.A., who is in the dub control position. This formation makes “Patri-Ark” more sci-fi compared to their debut “Aislander” (2020).
