“Stop Making Sense” direkam selama dua pertunjukan langsung.

Talking Heads adalah sebuah band New Wave dari New York yang berpusat pada bakat luar biasa pada penyanyi utamanya, David Byrne. Penampilan panggungnya kerap seperti David Bowie, ia selalu menunjukan pantomim.

There are always many reasons to watch a concert film such as the Talking Heads concert at the Pantages Theater in December 1983 which was immediately made into a documentary with the title “Stop Making Sense”. Watching Talking Heads in concert is a bit like Rock N Roll combined with “Jane Fonda’s Workout”. Because Talking Heads’ appearance at the concert was very energetic and extraordinary. “Stop Making Sense” was recorded during two live performances.

Talking Heads is a New Wave band from New York that focuses on the extraordinary talent of its lead singer, David Byrne. His stage appearance is often like David Bowie, and he always shows a pantomime. But in the movie “Stop Making Sense” when you watch, it’s not just the stage action. There are many aspects, such as the costumes, and the stage set, which are unique at the Talking Heads concert.

Watching the Talking Heads concert documentary is not like watching a concert in general. In the early part of the film, David Byrne walks onto an empty stage. He puts on his white shoes, then puts down the boombox, and the camera slowly moves up, showing that Byrne is already carrying a guitar and playing Psycho Killer in an acoustic version. On the second song, “Heaven,” Tina Weymouth joined the stage; on the third song, “Thank You for Sending Me an Angel,” Chris Frantz also joined the stage. On the fourth song, “Found a Job,” Jerry Harrison joined the stage. The Talking Heads personnel were complete on the Pantages Theater stage.

I just realized when I watched the movie “Stop Making Sense” that all of the members did not appear simultaneously at the beginning of the song but were split up per song. The stage marker was already filled with Talking Heads members and additional on the song “Burning Down the House.” And the moment that caught my attention the most was when they performed the song “Life During Wartime.” First of all, they were jumping up and down as if warming up for exercise. As usual, in the middle of the song, Byrne danced whatever the name of the move was, but it was unique.

More or less like this Byrne’s movement:

The film “Stop Making Sense” will be back in theaters with 4K quality which A24 has restored. The Deluxe edition of the legendary concert film soundtrack will be released as a 2-LP Set and a limited edition Digital with two previously unreleased tracks on August 18.
