Musik dan Sepakbola dalam Kultur Inggris

“You don’t run, not when you’re with us.. You stand your ground and fight!”
Sebuah kalimat yang mengingatkan kita kepada para pendukung di negeri tiga singa, kalimat ini hadir di film “Green Street Hooligans” dan muncul pula di film “This Is England”. Tulisan ini bukan ingin menjelaskan tentang para pendukung sepak bola di Inggris secara detail, tapi mengisahkan soal akulturasi antara musik dan sepak bola di Inggris, tempat musisi-musisi hebat dan juga negara lahirnya sepak bola.
Sepak bola tidak akan berlari kencang tanpa supporter yang mendukung di pinggir lapangan. Semangat menuju kejayaan yang terus dinyanyikan oleh para pendukung sepak bola di pinggir lapangan, atmosfer stadion mereka hidupkan dengan chants yang mereka kumandangkan.
Layaknya sebuah jantung, musik dan sepak bola tumbuh menjadi bagian yang sulit dilepaskan dalam kehidupan di Inggris. Sepak bola dan musik tumbuh layaknya agama dalam kehidupan, pencampuran yang indah di mana keduanya bisa saling mengisi satu sama lain. Bahkan ketika olahraga sejuta umat seperti sepak bola berhasil menemukan permainan indahnya dalam musik, mungkin kita akan berpikir, “Di mana bentuk korelasi dari keduanya ?”
Inggris memang dikenal sebagai ladangnya para pencipta musik yang jenius, telah terbukti dari masa ke masa. Dari The Beatles hingga Arctic Monkeys, pun The Vaccines merupakan musisi dari Inggris. Namun, siapa sangka beberapa tembang andalan mereka merupakan salah satu bentuk kecintaan mereka kepada sepak bola.

Mari kita bahas mulai dari Kasabian, Band asal Leicester yang terbentuk pada 1997. Sergio Pizzorno dan kawan-kawan berhasil mendobrak panggung musik Inggris lewat genre rock khas Mmereka. Sebelum menjadi sebuah band besar, mereka merupakan penggemar berat klub sepak bola Leicester City. Fakta mengejutkan lainnya, lagu andalan bertajuk “Fire” mereka ciptakan atas kecintaan mereka kepada Leicester City untuk membakar semangat tim kesayangan mereka. Kini “Fire” milik Kasabian menjadi anthem milik Leicester City dan juga menjadi theme song English Premiere League.
Jauh Sebelum Sergio Pizzorno dan kawan-kawan melesat lewat Kasabian, Bapak Indie Pop Inggris, Steven Patrick “Morissey” adalah contoh lainnya. Mantan vokalis era 80-an The Smiths ini sangat menyukai sepak bola, dan banyak sekali menciptakan lagu untuk berbagai macam klub di liga Inggris. Saat bersama The Smith, ia pernah menciptakan sebuah lagu berjudul “Frankly Mr. Shankly”, bercerita tentang pelatih legendaris Liverpool, Bill Shankly. Kemudian ia membuat sebuah lagu berjudul “Roy’s Keen”. Lagu itu dia ciptakan untuk pemain Manchester United, Roy Keane.
Dilihat lebih dalam lagi, sepak bola patut bangga ketika musisi-musisi di Inggris mendukung penuh permainan mereka lewat indahnya balutan musik khas Inggris. Seperti “Yellow Submarine” milik The Beatles menjadi anthem wajib di hampir seluruh penggemar klub-klub di Liga Inggris, atau “Love will Tear Us Apart” milik Joy Division dipelesetkan menjadi “Giggs Will Tear Us Apart”.
Sepak bola pun memberikan efek magis bagi para musisi di Inggris, daya tarik sepak bola menjadi sebuah kekuatan dalam menarik perhatian penonton. Kerap kali kita temukan musisi yang tampil dengan atribut klub bola kecintaan mereka.
Ian Brown merupakan pentolan dari The Stone Roses, kerap kali menggunakan jersey milik Manchester United saat berada di atas panggung. Atau kejadian menarik di Tanah Air, sang vokalis The Stone Roses mengibarkan bendera Manchester United kepada para penggemarnya di Jakarta.
Tak mau kalah dengan Ian Brown, Gallagher bersaudara pun sering menggunakan atribut milik klub kesayangan mereka, Manchester City, ketika masih aktif bersama Oasis. Bahkan mereka dinobatkan sebagai duta supporter tim Mancester City.
Atau ketika Steve Harris, gitaris dari Iron Maiden, sengaja merakit gitar miliknya dengan lambang klub bola West Ham United sebagai bentuk kecintaannya kepada West Ham.
Musik dan sepak bola akan selalu berhubungan. Perbedaan ranah antara keduanya tidaklah menjadi tembok besar yang menghalangi romansa mereka. Ketika irama mulai mengalun dan bola sudah digelindingkan, mereka layaknya Romeo dan Juliet yang tak bisa dipisahkan.
Seperti Pink Floyd yang menyerukan kemewahan dan harta terkalahkan dengan sebuah klub bola.

Music and Football in English Culture

“You don’t run, not when you’re with us… You stand your ground and fight!”
This sentence reminds us of the football supporters in the land of the three lions. It appeared in movies like “Green Street Hooligans” and “This Is England.” This column doesn’t want to explain football supporters in England in detail. It’s about the acculturation between music and football in England, where great musicians and football were born.
Football won’t be euphoric and atmospheric without supporters on the sidelines. The passion for glory that continues to be sung by football supporters on the sidelines, the atmosphere of their stadium is alive with the chants they sing.
Like a heart, music and football have become an inseparable part of life in England. Football and music grow like religions in life, a beautiful mix where the two can complement each other. Even when a million people’s sport like football finds its beauty in music, we may think, “Where is the correlation between them?”
England is known as a melting pot of genius music creators, and it has been proven from time to time. From The Beatles, The Arctic Monkeys to The Vaccines, all of them were bands born in England.

Let’s start with Kasabian, a Leicester band that formed in 1997. Sergio Pizzorno and his friends succeeded in breaking into the British music scene through their distinctive rock genre. Before becoming a big band, they were big fans of the Leicester City football club. Another surprising fact is that the hit “Fire” is for their love for Leicester City to ignite the spirit of their favorite team. Now Kasabian’s “Fire” is Leicester City’s anthem and also the theme song for the English Premier League.
Long Before Sergio Pizzorno and friends through Kasabian, the father of British Indie Pop, Steven Patrick “Morissey” is another example. The former vocalist of the ’80s, The Smiths, is very fond of football and wrote many songs for various clubs in the English league. While with The Smith, he once composed a song called “Frankly Mr. Shankly,” which tells the story of the legendary Liverpool coach, Bill Shankly. Then he made a song called “Roy’s Keen,” a song for Manchester United’s Roy Keane.
When we dig deeper, football should be proud when musicians in England fully support their game through the beautiful bands of British music. Such as The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine,” which became a mandatory anthem for almost all fans of clubs in the Premier League. Also, Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” was spoofed as “Giggs Will Tear Us Apart.”
Football also has a magical effect on musicians in England. The attraction of football is a force in attracting the audience’s attention. We often find musicians who perform with the attributes of their love of a football club.
Ian Brown, for example, the frontman of The Stone Roses, often wears Manchester United’s jersey when he is on stage. Or an exciting incident when visiting the country, the vocalist of The Stone Roses flying the Manchester United flag to his fans in Jakarta.
Not to be outdone by Ian Brown, the Gallagher brothers often used the attributes of their favorite club, Manchester City, when they were still active with Oasis. They have even been named as ambassadors for the Manchester City team.
Or when Steve Harris, guitarist from Iron Maiden, accidentally assembled his guitar with the West Ham United football club symbol as a form of his love for West Ham.
We will always connect music and football. The difference in the realm between the two is not a big wall that hinders their romance. When the rhythm starts to roll, and the ball is rolling, they’re just like Romeo and Juliet, who can’t be separated.
Like in Pink Floyd’s “Money”: We can beat luxury and treasure with a football club.
