Experimental music undoubtedly has a special place in Taiwan’s independent music scene. Even though it’s not popular music with a market that can be considered a niche, the musicians and their community are always on the move. One name that is currently being discussed is the duo, Mong Tong.
Mong Tong is a musical project by two brothers: Hom Yu and Jiun Chi. They described their music as diàn zi qin music (electronic keyboard). This music combined other genres such as Hokkien pop, rock, electronic music, ambient, and many different genres, making their musical style more attractive. In composing their music, Mong Tong takes inspiration from themes of sci-fi, occultism, and Taiwanese superstitions, to local folklore.
Even though it is considered to have an unpopular musical style, Mong Tong has recently garnered attention not only in the domestic Taiwanese music scene but internationally. In June 2022, for example, they embarked on a European tour with the Japanese psychedelic rock group Kikagaku Moyo. In November of the same year, the duo was also lined up as the opening act for Kikagaku Moyo’s farewell concert. Still, in 2022, Mong Tong is also lined up as one of the bands from Taiwan to appear at the Taiwan Beats showcase for the annual SXSW event in the United States.
Pseudo-Taiwanese Music
The local characteristics of Taiwanese music in the last few years have often been presented by several Taiwanese bands in the independent scene. Mong Tong, with its distinctive musical style, is also named one of them. However, Hom Yu said that Mong Tong might be more suitable to be called pseudo-Taiwanese music.
This is not without reason because Mong Tong creates music based on Western musical instruments, not traditional instruments like other bands. However, he did not deny taking many musical references from Taiwanese culture.
The scope is vast. In an interview reported by Unmute Taiwan Beats, Hom Yu admitted that one of the Taiwanese cultures that inspired him was the funeral tradition of the Taiwanese. According to him, the cemetery in Taiwan is quite lively. It will hire people to cry, and there will also be parades, music, dancing, and even the occasional striptease. According to him, this is a potent combination.
“I used to listen to extreme metal music, but now I feel that Taiwan’s environment is “extreme” itself,” said Hom Yu.
Apart from that, they also took a lot of influences from old video games and movies. That’s why some of their visuals feel the influence of visual arts in the 80s and 90s.

A Productive Duo
Mong Tong started their journey as a duo in 2017. They appear distinctive, with their eyes covered with a red cloth in every appearance. In 2020, they released their first album, Mystery 秘神, through an independent Japanese music label, Guruguru Brain.
In 2021, they released “Music from Taiwan Mystery” and “Orientations” albums. Meanwhile, in 2022 they released their full-length album “Four Stories of Four Seasons 怪譚之四季故事” on a cassette format with Chiching Records and one EP, “Indies.” Their latest album is exciting because it also included an audiobook of ghost stories read by a Taiwanese storyteller.
This year they plan to release a new album. In addition, world tour plans are also being worked on. Will Indonesia be one of the destinations? Let’s wait.
