Album pertamanya mendapat perhatian pemilik T.K. Records, Henry Stone.

Namun Henry Stone merasa yakin bahwa “What You Won’t Do For Love” akan menjadi lagu yang paling hits. T.K.

Robert Hunter Caldwell is a singer, songwriter, and musician from America. Born in Manhattan and raised in Miami, Caldwell was exposed to many different music genres, such as Latin, R&B, Haiti, and Reggae. The fun fact is that his mother, as a real estate agent, once sold a house to one of her clients, that turned out to be Bob Marley. From then, Caldwell maintained a good relationship with Bob Marley.

In his youth, Caldwell listened to Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald tunes. At 12, Caldwell began playing the piano and guitar until he found interest in Rock N’ Roll, Jazz, and Blues. Later he formed his band “Katmandu,” where he contributed to mostly the song making and process. At 17, Caldwell received an offer to work in a band in Las Vegas until he finally moved from Miami to Los Angeles.

Long story short, in the 1970s, after gaining a reputation in Miami clubs as a talented musician, Caldwell decided to pursue a solo career until finally, one of the record labels from Miami, T.K. Records signed Caldwell as one of its roasters. His first album caught the attention of T.K. Records chairman Henry Stone. He commented that the album was good, but it lacked hit songs. Caldwell returned to the studio to record what became one of Caldwell’s biggest hits, “What You Won’t Do For Love,” which he worked on for two days in the studio.

Caldwell wanted the song “What You Won’t Do For Love” to be placed sixth on the album, as he thought the album’s second track, “My Flame,” would be his hit single. T.K. Records is a famous label among African-American listeners. The label’s executives wanted to hide the fact that Caldwell was white. This also affected Caldwell’s first album, where his face was not on the cover. When Caldwell toured with Natalie Cole, many black audience members were surprised to see that Caldwell was white. However, since then, Caldwell’s name has become increasingly known.
