December 23 — 25 2022

3 Days

Day 1 – Friday, December 23

The event didn’t start until 13:00, but people could already be seen waiting outside the venue since as early as 11:00. Just before the door opened, a long line had formed outside the building. As soon as our staff gave the green light, people started to rush in, resulting in a little chaos at the entrance before we took control of the situation. We had anticipated some commotion to happen as it always did at the previous Fishy Businesses, but for some of our first-timer staff, experiencing it in person was quite a dumbstruck moment.

The adrenaline was high as people were determined to get their most desired items. This year, the stakes were even higher with the introduction of 15 limited-edition rarities only available at the event. By 16:00, most of the rarities were sold out.

The flow finally slowed down around two hours in, when we could at last take stock of everything that was happening in the building. In the scene were shoppers of all varieties: a couple in matching outfits, a lively group of friends, ultra-efficient jastippers with full shopping bags, and even a middle-aged woman facetiming her son—showing pairs he might like. Occasionally someone’s face would glow up as they found an item they didn’t even know they were looking for. Such moments were always delightful to watch.

For this event, we had turned the venue into a cave of computer nostalgia, with old tube monitors scattered all around the rooms, a storage room masquerading as a server room, signages with pixelated graphics, to staff clad in white parkas for a somewhat cybercore aesthetic. Fishy Business is that time of the year when we go all out on random themes, and we had the most fun preparing for this one.

Day 2 – Saturday, December 24

The sun was high up in the sky when Fishy Business Day 2 started. After some evaluations of the previous day, a few changes were made for a better experience. In the entertainment area, our staff took turns pumping out electronic beats for the guests. At idler hours, the area turned into a live stream site instead, where we did live reportages and gave out special discounts for viewers at home.

The sale was going strong with our staff coordinating searches for glitch items requested by the shoppers. What are these glitch items, you might ask. Due to our strict quality control standards, many pairs with even the most minor, almost indiscernible defects would not make it into the box. They were kept safe in the warehouse until we took them out at Fishy Business and gave them awesome price tags for the quality. To make a case, during the sale, shoppers would ask the staff for some help locating the defects, and often our staff knew just as well as the shoppers did. Sometimes it’s tricky to pinpoint exactly what’s wrong with these pairs. We guess that’s not a bad thing.

Day 3 – Sunday, December 25

The last day of Fishy Business also happened to fall on Christmas—perhaps explaining the joyful excitement we felt in the air. Although the day was chilly with occasional showers, it was also our busiest day. Lines kept forming between light rains and throughout the afternoon. At the end of the day, our click counter showed that over 500 people had attended the event on the last day of Fishy Business.

As the sun went down, the building was brought alive by various light installations—beams of neons on exposed concrete illuminating the entire space. One of our staff joked that the building looked like a nightclub from the outside, and we’d say that’s pretty spot on. By transforming the space aglow and playing lovely beats for all to enjoy, the event turned out the way we wanted it to be: a fun, multi-sensorial experience at the end of the year that we may remember for years to come.
