On this feature of Catching Up With… We had a quick catch-up with Subsonic Eye about all the things that happened last year and what’s next for 2023.
Hi guys, how are you?
We’re doing good! We’re just taking a break now after being pretty busy for a lot of 2022.
How was last year? Finally, a gig again in Jakarta after such a long time. Such a packed show it was!
Last year was so fun! After two years of not doing much from 2020-2021 because of COVID, we were eager to do much in 2022. When things opened up, and it was okay to travel again, we immediately started planning shows worldwide. We were so happy that one of the places we got to play in again was Jakarta. It was definitely one of the best shows we ever played, and we feel so welcomed there. Shout-out to Kolibri Records!! <3
And finally, KEXP, how’s the USA tour? Always excited and proud at the same time when Southeast Asia acts could perform there!
It was so surreal! We’re big fans of KEXP always watching their videos on Youtube at home, so to be there in the actual studio was just crazy. USA tour was awesome too, we couldn’t believe that people would come out to see us and everyone there was so nice. Mexican food is amazing!
Your resolution for 2023, another EP/LP, is a must?
We have an LP coming out this year 🙂
Tell us about your creative process and how your music transformed from Strawberry Feels, Dive Into, Nature of Things, and the latest release, Melt the Wax?
Our guitarist Dan and vocalist Wahidah will write the basic structures of the song first, then they’ll share it with the rest of the band and work on it together. We just do that process like 10 times until we have enough songs for an album, then we go and record it ourselves. When we started out, our music was a lot more hazy with a lot of layers, but overtime we just got tired of that sound. We decided to experiment with a more raw, dry and direct sound and here we are now!
What’s the best lesson that you guys found last year?
Relax and take it easy!
Tell us your favourite go-to place in town? You could tell us anything!
Sim Lim Square’s ‘Taste Good’ restaurant!!! Best Salted Egg Chicken in the world
Any cool spots/place recommendations we should visit when in town? We’re planning to visit SG this year actually.
Check out the restaurant we mentioned above. Gardens by the Bay, Little India and Chinatown are pretty cool to visit too. For nature-y places, you can check out Pulau Ubin, Rifle Range and Macritchie Reservoir.
Tell us one piece of advice for the young generations out there!
Don’t wait for things to happen, just go and do it yourself!
